She thought losing her memory was the worst thing that could happen, but she was soon to learn she was wrong. Alicia Russell wakes one day to an empty past and an uncertain future. She finds herself living with a husband and children she can't remember, and is in despair of ever regaining her memory and herself. But when her memory comes back as quickly as it left, she learns that there are worse things as she struggles to come to terms with the dark secret her memory has delivered.

Living A Lie, was a heart-wrenching book to read. Immediately, I thought of how frightening it would be to wake up and realize that you don’t know who you are or anything about your life or the people who claim to be your family and friends. Andrew Russell was a wonderful, supportive husband, who did everything he could to help Alicia when it happened to her.

When Alicia’s memories eventually returned—except those for one day—I immediately began to wonder what was so crucial about that missing day.

There were hints, but a reader had to understand what they could mean in real life to sort them out. I am thankful that I have no personal experience with the trauma that led to Alicia Russell’s amnesia, but I know enough about it to understand how devastating it is, and how it impacts the victim’s entire life unless they can confront what happened and deal with it. Even with counseling, the path to a healthy, normal life is much longer and more difficult than the author would have had time to explore in this book. And very often, the victim does not have a strong support system to back them up.

Sheryl Lee did a brilliant job of portraying all of the characters in this work of fiction, and I was pleased to see that she gave Alicia the fortitude to pursue the issue to justice. Under the circumstances, it wouldn’t have been an easy thing to do in real life.
Sadly, this social issue is not uncommon. And often, the perpetrators are the last people that families or communities would expect to be involved in this sort of crime.

There are many true-to-life reactions and responses threaded into “Living A Lie.” I believe it would be a helpful book for anyone to read; doing so could open their eyes and minds to the telltale signs of abuse-whether they have experienced it or know someone who is reaching out for help. I highly recommend this book.

This is an extremely difficult topic to cover, but the author did it very well. The book was hard to put down. Problems were resolved realistically. I would definitely recommend this book.
This is a hard story, to read. A woman wakes up, with total amnesia. Her past has come back to haunt her. .
Suspenseful with well-formed characters, great descriptions and a story line, which keeps you reading.
I never thought that I would enjoy a book about someone with amnesia
Kudos to the author, Sheryl Lee,
This book should be read by everyone so that they become aware of what abuse does to a family. My family has gone through several types of abuse and it has been a long hard road. I intend to recommend this to my daughter's.
Alicia wakes up one morning and cannot remember anything. Not her name, what she looks like, where she lives, her husband, her children, nothing. Her husband and children are very supportive and her doctor says she may remember on her own and recommends a physiatrist. When Alicia does recover her memory it is all except one day, the day she lost her memory so she doesn't know why she lost it. Now she started getting panic attacks and during one of these attacks she remembers what she has been repressing. Not just since the loss of here memory but since she was a child.
This is a fiction story but could easily be true. When a woman wakes up without her memory she is surrounded by loving family. But is it the life she really had? A suspenseful read that will have your heart in your throat at times. Incredibly well written and certainly keeps you on edge, as you feel like you are in the dark with the main character, trying to find your way back to the light.
This author has portrayed one view of an emotionally devastating topic in this fictionalized story, taking the reader from memories of molestation through the beginnings of recovery for the main character, as well as the terrible emotional toll sexual molestation take on the victim. It is a "best case" scenario, with emotional support for the main character, as well as "resolution" and healing for the victim, the main character, and punishment for the perpetrator, it's not always the way of it. However, that being said, there is much here for the individual who has experienced this and a lot for those who have family or friends with these emotional scars which can bring more understanding. This is worthy read!
